Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) hosted a vibrant and memorable Africa Freedom Day Celebration for staff and students, bringing together the university community to honour the continent’s history, resilience, and cultural heritage. The event was graced by Mr. Tilyenji Kaunda, son of First Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, and the Executive Director of the National Forensic Authority, Brigadier General Prof. Lawson Simapuka.
In his welcome remarks, Deputy Vice Chancellor Dr. Balamurugan Easwaran highlighted the significance of Africa Freedom Day as a reminder of the sacrifices made by liberation heroes across the continent. He encouraged students to draw inspiration from Africa’s history and channel it into academic excellence, innovation, and service to society. He emphasized that education remains a powerful tool in sustaining the ideals of freedom, unity, and development.
The colourful event, marked by staff and students dressed in traditional African attire, featured engaging student showcases, alongside energetic dance and musical performances that celebrated Africa’s rich cultural diversity and identity.
Delivering a keynote reflection, Mr. Tilyenji Kaunda shared insightful and rarely told stories about the first family and the broader freedom struggle. He encouraged students and staff to appreciate Zambia’s liberation history and uphold values of unity, patriotism, and selfless service.
Adding to the reflections, University Librarian Mr. Wezi Nyirenda spoke on the significance of Africa Freedom Day, emphasizing the importance of preserving historical knowledge and ensuring that future generations understand the journey of African liberation. He underscored the role of libraries as custodians of history and learning.
Head of Department in the School of Medicine, Ms. Vivianne Symuleya, also delivered an insightful talk focusing on the contribution of women to African freedom movements. She highlighted the often-overlooked role of women in shaping liberation struggles and nation-building, encouraging students to recognize and celebrate gender inclusivity in historical narratives.
The celebration concluded with vibrant performances that left attendees inspired and proud of Africa’s cultural heritage, reinforcing Texila American University Zambia’s commitment to holistic education that embraces history, culture, and academic excellence.
