Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) has officially launched the Kenneth Kaunda Scholarship 2026 in a landmark event held alongside the Africa Freedom Day celebrations. The launch was graced by Mr. Tilyenji Kaunda, son of First Republican President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, and the Executive Director of the National Forensic Authority, Brigadier General Prof. Lawson Simapuka.
The scholarship initiative is designed to expand access to medical education, particularly for deserving students pursuing studies in medicine, as part of the university’s commitment to academic excellence, equity, and national development.
Speaking at the event, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Balamurugan Easwaran, highlighted that the scholarship reflects the university’s mission of “transforming lives through accessible and high-quality education.” He noted that naming the scholarship after Dr. Kenneth Kaunda serves as a tribute to the former President’s lifelong dedication to education, humanism, and national unity.
The Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Amit Singh, emphasized the importance of investing in future healthcare professionals, stating that the initiative will help “bridge the gap in medical training by supporting talented students who demonstrate both academic potential and a passion for service.” He further encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s health sector.
Mr. Tilyenji Kaunda, in his remarks, reflected on the legacy of his late father, sharing insights into the values that guided Dr. Kenneth Kaunda during the liberation struggle and his leadership of the nation. He encouraged students to embrace discipline, patriotism, and service to humanity, noting that education remains one of the strongest tools for national transformation.
Brigadier General Prof. Lawson Simapuka commended the university for honouring Dr. Kaunda’s legacy through the scholarship initiative. He underscored the importance of partnerships between educational institutions and national bodies in building a skilled and ethical workforce.
The Registrar, Ms. Suguna, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the distinguished guests, university leadership, staff, and students for making the event a success. She reaffirmed the university’s commitment to implementing the scholarship in a transparent and impactful manner, ensuring that it benefits deserving students.
