Study Medicine in Zambia
for South African Students

Overview

Every year, thousands of qualified South African matriculants apply to study medicine in South Africa – and through no fault of their own, the vast majority are turned away due to severe, systemic seat shortages. If you are dealing with the frustration of missing out on a local university spot, you do not have to abandon your career dream. If you are researching how to study medicine abroad from South Africa, Texila American University (TAU) Zambia provides an accredited, English-medium path to an MBChB that keeps you close to home at a fraction of the cost of Western universities.

Quick Facts for South African Applicants:

  • Degree Awarded: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB)
  • Language of Instruction: 100% English (Lectures, Exams, and Hospital Rotations)
  • Location: Lusaka, Zambia (2-hour flight from Johannesburg)
  • Next Intake: March 2027

Why Zambia is the Premier Alternative to Studying Medicine in South Africa?

For South African students determined to become doctors, Zambia has become the most practical regional hub. TAU is a fully registered medical university in Lusaka, accredited by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and approved by the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ). Because Zambia sits within the SADC region, studying here means staying in a familiar cultural environment just a short flight away from home – avoiding the severe culture shock and massive tuition expenses associated with moving to Europe or the Americas.

MBChB vs. MBBS: Understanding Your Degree

TAU awards the MBChB (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery). This is the exact same professional classification used by South African universities and across the Commonwealth. If you have been researching how to study MBBS abroad from South Africa, rest assured that the MBChB is its structural and clinical equivalent.

  • Direct Stream (5 Years): Requires an NSC (Matric) with a minimum average score of 60% (Level 5 or higher) across four core subjects: English, Mathematics, Life Sciences (Biology), and Physical Sciences.
  • Bridging Pathway (HPFP): If your marks fell just short of the direct medical entry threshold, our Health Professions Foundation Programme gives you a guaranteed, structured bridge into the standard MBChB track upon successful completion.

Clinical Training at Approved Zambian Teaching Hospitals

Texila American University, Zambia conducts hands-on, supervised clinical rotations for its students at affiliated Zambian teaching hospitals.

Before graduation, students will build real-world, practical experience across all core medical disciplines like Internal Medicine & Surgery, Pediatrics & Child Health, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Psychiatry & Community Medicine.

Registering and Practicing Back in South Africa

This is the most important thing to understand before you enrol. A TAU MBChB graduate qualifies to register with the Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) and practise in Zambia.

To return to South Africa and practise, you must register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), which has its own recognition and assessment process for foreign-qualified doctors – this typically involves verification of your qualification and may require passing the HPCSA board examination and completing supervised training. Recognition is not automatic.

Affordable Medical Education for South African Students

Cost is one of the biggest reasons South African students choose Zambia. TAU’s tuition is designed to be competitive against studying medicine abroad in the UK, Ireland, the US or the Caribbean, and living costs in Lusaka are modest.

TAU also runs scholarships and bursaries, including a Kenneth Kaunda Scholarship for only Zambian Students, and reviews each applicant’s circumstances individually.
