Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) continues to strengthen its commitment to experiential learning as its medical students recently undertook a practical field visit to Shantumbu, a rural area within Lusaka District.
The visit formed part of the students’ hands-on training, aimed at bridging the gap between classroom-based learning and real-world medical practice. During the visit, the students engaged with the local community and visited the Shantumbu health facility, where they were exposed to the day-to-day operations of a rural healthcare setting.
The experience provided students with valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with delivering healthcare services in underserved areas. It also enabled them to observe patient interactions, understand resource limitations, and appreciate the critical role of primary healthcare in improving community wellbeing.
Speaking on the importance of such initiatives, faculty members emphasized that community-based training is essential in developing well-rounded medical professionals who are not only clinically competent but also socially responsive and compassionate.
The students expressed appreciation for the opportunity, noting that the visit enhanced their understanding of public health and strengthened their passion for serving diverse communities.
