Medical students from Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) extended their classroom knowledge to the community by organizing a Hypertension and Mental Health Awareness Campaign at Lilayi Secondary School in Lusaka.
The campaign, led by Ms. Niza Rean Simwanza, a faculty member in the School of Medicine, aimed to educate students and the wider Lilayi community on the importance of early detection, prevention, and management of hypertension and mental health issues.
Ahead of the main event, the students actively engaged the Lilayi community by distributing informative flyers, sparking conversations on the significance of maintaining healthy lifestyles and mental well-being. The campaign culminated in an interactive session at Lilayi Secondary School, where the students used creative performances, role-plays, and presentations to simplify complex medical information on hypertension and mental health for the learners.
Ms. Simwanza emphasized that such initiatives are part of TAUZ’s commitment to community engagement and practical learning for its students. She noted that the campaign not only raised awareness but also helped students develop key skills in public health education, communication, and advocacy.
“This initiative is a reflection of our mission to create healthcare professionals who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible,” she said.
The event was well-received by the students and teachers at Lilayi Secondary School, with many appreciating the medical students’ efforts in bringing crucial health information to their doorstep.
TAUZ continues to position itself as a university that goes beyond theoretical training by embedding community outreach and practical experiences in its academic programs—empowering its students to make a difference within Zambia and across the Southern African region.
