Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) successfully hosted the Inter-University Debate Tournament at Cheryl Gardens in Lusaka attracting participation from six top universities in Zambia.
The prestigious event brought together brilliant minds from the University of Zambia (UNZA), University of Lusaka (UNILUS), Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU), ZCAS University, Eden University, and Texila American University Zambia.
The Guest of Honour, Mr. Amos Mumba, Director of University Education, expressed his delight at witnessing young intellectuals engage in thought-provoking discourse, which he said is crucial for shaping Zambia’s future leaders.
In his speech, he emphasized the importance of such debates in developing critical thinking, public speaking, and problem-solving skills in students.
“Debates like this create a platform for the youth to think critically,” Mr. Mumba stated.
A special appearance was made by Dr. Joseph Mutambo, Committee Member for Public Health, who underscored the importance of interdisciplinary engagements in addressing national and global challenges.
Dr. Mutambo said, “The future of public health, like many other fields, relies on collaboration and the ability to approach issues from multiple perspectives. These debates are instrumental in fostering such a mindset.”
Prof. Ajay Poddar, Vice Chancellor of Texila American University Zambia stressed the university’s commitment to promoting intellectual and professional development among students, not just through academics but also by offering platforms for critical engagement and leadership growth.
After a series of intense and passionate debates, Eden University emerged as the overall winner of the tournament, UNZA secured second place, while UNILUS claimed the third spot. The competition was closely contested, with each team demonstrating a high level of preparation and intellect.
