Medicine and music have been Panashe Sydney Chandayengerwa’s twin passions. But as a busy medical student in Zambia, he promises to not give up on music.
A third-year medical student of Texila American University, Panashe has collaborated with big names in the South African music industry. “Music may not be my full-time career or my primary source of income,” says the 23-year-old, but he will continue to nurture this soulful experience.
The eldest of three siblings, Panashe hails from a humble household in Harare, Zimbabwe. “Medicine has always been my dream, even before I picked up my first musical instrument,” Panashe says. “I have always wanted to serve the community, save lives.” Doctors have the privilege to save lives, and as a student of Texila, I will build skills and acumen to be a medical professional one day, he says.
“But I will not give up on music,” Panashe, whose stage name is Scarla Winter, says, advising youngsters to develop their talents alongside building their career, though it is not easy.
Panashe is multi-faceted. He sings, plays instruments and writes music. In 2013, he joined ABRSM music label in Harare, and with a burning desire to become a pop artiste, he mastered his production skills. He released an album, ‘Eversion’ in December 2020 that went platinum. Charmed by the voice of Panashe, top South African artistes featured him in his songs. Scarla Winter
