Texila American University Zambia recently celebrated a significant milestone for its MBChB students with a White Coat Ceremony held at Cheryl Gardens. The event marked the official welcome for new medical students and those advancing to their clinical phase, a rite of passage symbolizing their commitment to the medical profession.
The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, including HPCZ Deputy Registrar Dr. Muhumpu Kafwamfwa, ZMA President Dr. Kalumba Roy Tolopu, Chainama Hospital Senior Superintendent Dr. Margret Chibowa, Texila American University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ajay Poddar and TAU’s GCEO Mr. Vivek Kishore Verma.
In his welcome address, Prof. Ajay Poddar emphasized the importance of the White Coat Ceremony in the journey of a medical student. “This ceremony is not just a tradition but a pledge to uphold the highest standards of medical ethics and patient care. At Texila, we are committed to providing our students with the best education and training to prepare them for the challenges of the medical profession.”
HPCZ Deputy Registrar Dr. Muhumpu Kafwamfwa inspired the students with words of encouragement, highlighting the significance of their future roles. “As you don these white coats, remember that you are stepping into a profession that demands dedication, compassion, and integrity. The Health Professions Council of Zambia is here to support you in maintaining these standards throughout your career.”
ZMA President Dr. Kalumba Roy Tolopu addressed the importance of continuous learning and professional development. “Medicine is a field that constantly evolves. As future doctors, it is crucial that you commit to lifelong learning and stay updated with the latest advancements to provide the best care for your patients.”
Dr. Margret Chibowa, Senior Superintendent at Chainama Hospital, shared her experiences from the clinical field and emphasized the practical aspects of medical training. “Clinical rotations are where you will apply the knowledge you’ve gained in the classroom. This is a time to learn, grow, and understand the realities of patient care. Embrace every opportunity to learn and make a difference.”
The White Coat Ceremony concluded with the symbolic donning of white coats by the students, signifying their entry into the medical profession. The event was filled with pride and excitement, marking a significant step in the students’ medical careers.
