Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) recently hosted a vibrant and engaging Sports Week that brought together students and staff in a celebration of teamwork, wellness and unity through sports.
The week-long activities featured various sporting disciplines and recreational activities including Football, Netball, Volleyball, Pool, Athletics, a 5 Kilometre Marathon and other fun games, creating an exciting atmosphere on campus.
Speaking during the official opening of the Sports Week, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Dr. Balamurugan Easwaran, emphasized the importance of sports in promoting holistic development among students and staff.
Dr. Easwaran said sports play a critical role in fostering teamwork, discipline, leadership and mental wellness, adding that institutions of higher learning should encourage a balance between academics and physical activities.
“Sports are an important part of university life because they help build unity, improve health and create a positive learning environment. Through such activities, students and staff are able to interact, relieve stress and strengthen teamwork beyond the classroom and offices,” he said.
Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Amit Singh, also highlighted the importance of fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Singh encouraged participants to remain physically active, stating that fitness contributes significantly to mental alertness, productivity and overall well-being.
“As future professionals and responsible individuals, it is important for us to embrace physical fitness as part of our daily lives. Regular sporting activities improve both physical and mental health and help individuals maintain balance in their demanding schedules,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of Department Ms. Vivinne Symuleya welcomed participants and commended both students and staff for their enthusiasm and commitment towards the Sports Week activities.
Ms. Symuleya said the event was not only about competition, but also about building friendships, promoting interaction and strengthening the Texila family spirit.
“We are delighted to see such overwhelming participation from both students and staff. Sports Week provides an opportunity for everyone to relax, interact and create lasting memories together,” she said. The Sports Week concluded successfully with participants showcasing teamwork, determination and sportsmanship throughout the various competitions and activities.
