Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) held a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) under the theme “Research Grants and Publications”, in a bid to build faculty capacity in research excellence and academic contribution. The event was spearheaded by the university’s Department of Research and Development, and attracted academic staff from various departments.
The main speaker at the session was Dr. Choolwe N. Jacobs, Head of the Department of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of Zambia, and Co-founder of Women in Global Health Zambia. Dr. Jacobs delivered an insightful presentation on the process of identifying grant opportunities, writing compelling proposals, and understanding the publishing landscape in academic research. She emphasized the importance of aligning research with national and global development priorities.
“Securing research funding is not just about writing well, it’s about knowing where the opportunities lie and demonstrating impact,” said Dr. Jacobs. “Academics must position themselves as thought leaders who can offer practical solutions to today’s challenges.”
Dr. Jacobs also encouraged faculty members to collaborate across disciplines, utilize institutional networks, and mentor emerging researchers.
Speaking during the event, Ms. Niza Rean Simwanza, a representative from the Department of Research and Development, said the university is committed to building a strong research culture that supports innovation and societal impact.
“Our goal is to equip faculty with the knowledge and tools they need to become not just educators, but active contributors to knowledge production,” Ms. Simwanza said.
The Faculty Development Programme is one of several initiatives by TAUZ aimed at advancing academic excellence, fostering research engagement, and enhancing the global visibility of the institution.
