Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ), in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, successfully hosted a high-level seminar aimed at empowering Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with knowledge on how to leverage incentives under regional trade agreements.
Held at the university’s Lilayi Campus, the seminar brought together entrepreneurs, policymakers, business advisors, and economic experts to unpack the benefits and practical strategies for accessing opportunities presented by regional blocs such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), COMESA, and SADC.
The event was officiated by the Minister of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, Hon. Elias Mubanga, who was represented by Chief Economist Mr. Chinyanta Chikuli. In his keynote address, Mr. Chikuli highlighted the critical role SMEs play in Zambia’s economic transformation and the importance of preparing them to take advantage of regional markets.
“Regional trade agreements are opening up new frontiers for Zambian businesses. It is important that our SMEs are not left behind in this wave of economic integration,” said Mr. Chikuli. “Government, in partnership with academia and the private sector, is committed to building the capacity of our entrepreneurs to compete beyond borders.”
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Billy Malijani, Chief Economist at the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, provided detailed insights into the structure of AfCFTA and how SMEs could position themselves to benefit from its trade incentives. He stressed the importance of compliance, quality assurance, and market intelligence as key enablers for cross-border trade success.
The seminar also featured experienced business advisors from MJV Chartered Accountants and Advisors. Mr. Ronald Choga, Senior Partner at MJV, guided participants on strategic financial planning and tax incentives available for SMEs under trade agreements. Ms. Namakando Mwahamubi from MJV’s Business Development Unit emphasized the importance of financial discipline, export readiness, and business registration for accessing regional markets.
In his remarks, TAUZ Vice Chancellor Prof. Ajay Poddar emphasized the university’s commitment to providing relevant platforms that bridge academic knowledge with real-world business solutions.
“At Texila, we believe education must lead to transformation,” said Prof. Poddar. “This seminar is part of our broader vision to support Zambia’s economic growth by equipping SMEs with the skills, information, and networks they need to thrive in a competitive regional environment.”
He further stated that TAUZ would continue to collaborate with key government ministries and industry players to provide capacity-building opportunities not just for students, but also for the wider business community.
Participants at the seminar expressed gratitude for the practical insights shared, noting that such engagements were crucial in helping them scale their businesses beyond local markets.
The event concluded with a networking session, where SMEs had the opportunity to interact directly with policymakers and industry advisors, fostering partnerships for future growth.
