MBChB students from Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) doing their Community Medicine course undertook an educational field trip to Bigtree Beverages Plant located in the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone (MFEZ). The visit was aimed at exposing students to real-world occupational health and safety practices in an industrial environment.
Led by their Community Medicine Lecturer and Public Health Specialist, Ms. Niza Rean Simwanza, the students had the opportunity to observe safety protocols, health risk mitigation strategies, and workplace health systems implemented at the plant.
Speaking after the field trip, Ms. Simwanza highlighted the importance of such practical engagements in shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals.
“It is important for medical students to not only learn about occupational health in theory but also to see it being applied in real-life settings. This experience helps them appreciate the role of preventive health measures in the workplace and prepares them to address occupational health challenges in their future practice,” she said.
The visit forms part of the Community Medicine curriculum designed to equip students with a broad understanding of public health issues, including workplace health and safety, environmental health, and community-based health interventions.
Texila American University Zambia continues to emphasize experiential learning as a core component of its academic programs, bridging the gap between classroom theory and professional practice.
