Early Years: Finding My Footing Amid Loss and Hope
My name is Dr. Rabecca Kayumba, and my story begins in a humble household in Kafue District, Lusaka Province, Zambia. I was the third-born in a family of eleven—three boys and eight girls—and the eldest among the girls. Growing up, I carried the responsibility of being a role model, even as I quietly navigated personal struggles.
Tragedy struck early in my life. My younger brother, who had always been my closest companion since Grade 1, developed a sudden mental illness. The emotional toll of his condition deeply affected my Grade 12 performance. His death in 1998, followed by my father’s passing in 1999, further tested my strength. Yet, these painful moments planted the seed of resilience that would guide me for years to come.
Beginning My Career in Education
Although my academic results did not initially reflect my potential, I pressed forward. I obtained a certificate in primary school teaching in 1995, followed by a diploma in primary education in 2003. These milestones were only the beginning.
In 2005, I enrolled at the University of Zambia, determined to go further. By 2009, I proudly graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Education, specializing in Home Economics and Social Sciences. Education had become more than a path—it was my purpose.
Climbing the Ladder: From Teacher to Lecturer
My commitment to growth soon earned recognition. In 2010, I was promoted to a lecturer position at the National In-Service Training College (NISTCOL). At the time, I was also navigating life as a young widow, making the balance between personal life and professional growth even more complex.
With the college’s sponsorship and encouragement, I pursued a Master’s in Food Science and Nutrition in Zimbabwe, which I completed in 2013. This academic phase deepened my research capabilities and passion for nutrition, especially within African communities.
A Shift in Direction: Embracing the PhD Journey
In 2017, a new door opened—I was selected among five women in Zambia to receive sponsorship for a science-based PhD. It was an incredible honor, yet the challenges I encountered at my previous university made me question my path.
Eventually, I made the life-changing decision to transfer to Texila American University, where I began my PhD program in May 2021. Initially, I was overwhelmed with the workload—10 demanding courses with intensive research components. But something was different this time: I felt supported, challenged, and inspired.
The Texila Advantage: Excellence in Education
Texila American University offered more than just a curriculum. The institution provided a nurturing academic environment grounded in accountability, mentorship, and global academic standards. Each assignment, discussion forum, and research activity was intended to build not only knowledge but also leadership and analytical thinking.
The university’s structure allowed me to finish my PhD program in just three and a half years, during which I published three articles—an achievement I had once thought impossible. It was here that I truly discovered the power of inclusive, high-quality education.
Personal Growth and Support System
Behind my academic achievements lies a web of support. My late father, Mr. Brydon Nathan Kayumba, always championed education, encouraging me even in his final days. My mother taught me independence and resilience, and my eldest brother made personal sacrifices to ensure all his siblings became self-sufficient.
These influences, combined with my faith in Jehovah God, gave me the strength to persevere through every trial.
The Pinnacle Moment: Graduation in Dubai
One of the proudest days of my life came on November 29, 2024, when I walked across the stage at my graduation ceremony in Dubai, UAE, as a PhD graduate of Texila American University. It was more than a personal achievement—it was a moment of gratitude, reflection, and triumph over adversity.
I wished deeply that my father and brother could have witnessed that proud day. Their absence was felt, but their influence was ever-present.
Advice for Aspiring Scholars
To all those aspiring to further their education, especially women across Africa, I say this: do not let setbacks define your potential. Life may hand you obstacles, but with the right environment and determination, you can overcome them all.
Choose a university that sees your worth, supports your goals, and gives you the tools to lead, research, and inspire.
Looking Ahead: From Learner to Leader
I now stand not only as a lecturer and researcher but as a living example of what focused effort and proper mentorship can achieve. My goal is to continue nurturing future educators and nutrition advocates across Zambia and beyond. With the training, insight, and resilience I’ve gained, I am fully prepared for this mission.
Closing Thoughts
Texila American University gave me more than a degree—it gave me a renewed sense of purpose. From a shy schoolgirl in rural Zambia to a confident, published PhD graduate, my story is proof that with courage, faith, and the right academic ecosystem, anything is possible.
