Texila American University Zambia (TAUZ) Dean for the School of Medicine, Dr. Amit Singh, has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of Mpox to the nearest health facility immediately.
Speaking on Power FM’s Doctor Diaries program with renowned presenter Viola, Dr. Singh explained that while Mpox, commonly known as Monkeypox, is not currently a major public health threat, delayed treatment could lead to severe complications. He emphasized that Zambia has recorded confirmed cases, making early detection and medical intervention crucial in controlling its spread.
“Mpox may start with mild symptoms, but if left untreated, it can lead to serious infections and complications. We urge everyone to be aware of the warning signs and seek medical help at the earliest opportunity,” Dr. Singh stated.
He highlighted common symptoms of Mpox, which include:
- Rash
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Back pain
- Low energy
- Swollen lymph nodes
Dr. Singh further advised that Mpox spreads through close contact with an infected person, contaminated surfaces, or infected animals. He encouraged the public to maintain good hygiene, avoid unnecessary contact with suspected cases, and follow public health guidelines.
“We have the knowledge and the medical resources to manage this disease, but community awareness and quick action are key to preventing widespread infections,” he added.
Texila American University Zambia continues to engage in public awareness campaigns to ensure that communities are well-informed about health threats and preventive measures.
