Guidance and counselling for students is an integral component of education, especially higher education. Guidance and counselling programs promote personal, social, educational, and career development of students.
Students’ educational, academic, career, personal, and social needs should be the focus when one plans to deliver a developmental, comprehensive guidance and counselling program.
The diverse needs of students may require specific counselling expertise. A good counsellor should always recognize students’ boundaries of competencies and education and cater to those specific needs.
As a top medical college in Zambia, at Texila American University, we constantly strive to spread proper guidance and counselling among young students. It was a matter of great pride for us to be part of the second National Conference on Guidance and Counselling organized by the National Guidance and Counselling Association of Zambia (NAGCAZ) in collaboration with the Ministry of General Education.

The conference was a two-day event held between 23rd August and 24th August 2018 at the New Government Complex in Lusaka. The theme of the conference was – Improving learner performance through guidance and counseling.
The success of the conference could be estimated by the fact that around 500 counsellors from various reputed high schools had attended the conference. Some delegates from the US National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) were also part of the conference.
We were elated to have some of the counsellors at our booth. They not also shared their experience and knowledge with us but also gave their contact details to our representatives. After interacting with counsellors, we realized that the majority of the students in high school look forward to pursuing a career as a doctor, while others are interested in pharmacy, information technology and education.
The conference was an overwhelming experience with the participants enjoying the event thoroughly!
