Spring24 TV has interviewed Dr. Lawson Simapuka, Dean of Medicine at Texila American University, wherehe has shared his views on the Russian-developed Sputnik V vaccine to fight against the COVID-19 virus.
In the interview, Dr. Simapuka expresses his opinion of the vaccine as an important step against the COVID-19 virus and shares his views on adapting the vaccine to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in Zambia and how Zambia and other African countries can contribute to the fight in their own way.
Upon inquiring about the viability of the vaccine, as it is produced under abnormal circumstances due to time constraints, Dr. Simapuka urges us to look at it from a different perspective. As there are currently no other viable options on offer, fast-tracking of the vaccine is not the worst of the country’s concerns. Dr. Simapuka sees the vaccine as a potentially possible candidate worthy of attention and further research to help people who require confidence and aid in returning to their everyday lives.
Dr. Simapuka further highlights that bridging studies should be undertaken. Moreover, the vaccination should be taken on a trial basis to assess its compatibility and potency with the Zambian population. Dr. Simapuka also called other African countries to invest in research and development of vaccines to better understand its citizens and the world in the future.
Upon questioning, if he would take the vaccine to help with the research process, Dr. Simapuka responds that he is a believer in asceticism and would gladly sign up for the vaccination test. The interview gives us a great insight into the Sputnik V vaccine through a tenured medical professional’s eyes and allows us to consider the facts to make up one’s own stance on the matter.
