Millions of people require blood and blood product transfusion each year. Blood transfusion also helps people with life-threatening diseases live longer and better lives. Surgeries and other medical procedures require blood transfusion too.
Better accessibility to blood and blood products can help countless lives. There isn’t even an adequate supply of blood in numerous countries, leading to loss of life to even childbirth. The only way to ensure the proper supply is through regular blood donations.
In a joint initiative with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the World Health Organization organizes World Blood Donor Day on 14 June every year since 2005. The day aims to create awareness of the necessity for safe blood. The day also aims to thanks voluntary blood donors for their contribution.
Regular voluntary blood donations are the only way of assuring an adequate supply of blood. WHO’s chief goal was for all countries to source all their blood supplies through unpaid voluntary donations by 2020.
To honor the aims of World Blood Donor Day, Texila American University organized a blood donation drive at the Zambia campus on 28 May 2021. This blood drive was conducted in partnership with Zambia National Blood Transfusion Service.
